High School Summer Research Program

The High School Summer Research Program is an intensive, four-week laboratory research training experience offered through the RMTL Academy at UC San Diego. Designed for motivated high school students interested in science, medicine, and research, this free program provides participants with hands-on training in fundamental and advanced laboratory techniques commonly used in academic and biomedical research settings.

Students begin by developing essential laboratory skills and learning the principles of safe and responsible scientific practice. Through guided instruction and hands-on activities, participants gain experience with laboratory safety protocols, proper use of scientific equipment, accurate measurement techniques, and experimental procedures that form the foundation of scientific research.

Throughout the program, students receive practical training in:

  • Laboratory safety and research best practices

  • Pipetting techniques and accurate liquid handling

  • Preparation of solutions and reagents

  • pH measurement and analysis

  • Centrifugation and sample processing

  • Spectrophotometry and quantitative data collection

  • Scientific record keeping and laboratory documentation

  • Experimental design and data interpretation

As students build their laboratory competencies, they are introduced to advanced research methodologies routinely used in biological and biomedical sciences. Participants gain hands-on experience with techniques such as:

  • Protein purification and separation methods

  • Enzyme kinetics, including the study of enzyme activity and reaction rates

  • Gel electrophoresis for the analysis of proteins and other biological molecules

  • Quantitative analysis and interpretation of experimental results

  • Research problem-solving and critical thinking skills

In addition to laboratory training, students learn how scientific research drives discoveries in medicine, biotechnology, and human health. The program exposes participants to the research process—from formulating scientific questions and conducting experiments to analyzing data and communicating findings.

The High School Summer Research Program provides students with a unique opportunity to experience university-level research in a supportive learning environment. By working with experienced instructors and mentors, participants gain valuable technical skills, confidence in the laboratory, and a deeper understanding of STEM careers and pathways in scientific research
